Use
of spare machines during prescribed laboratories
The Policy document outlines how the School's undergraduate
teaching laboratories, Labs 2.1, 2.3, 2.5, 2.7, and 2.9, may be
used during prescribed laboratory times. The primary motivation
for this Policy is to make the most effective use of the laboratories
for teaching purposes. It is not the goal of this Policy
to maximize the use of all available laboratory equipment and,
at times, the goal of effective teaching will be in conflict with
the maximal use of equipment.
At all times, including times outside of prescribed laboratory
periods, computing equipment may only be used subject to the School's
Conditions of Use of Computing
Laboratories.
- During any prescribed laboratory period, held in any of the
School's 5 undergraduate teaching laboratories, the lecturer
or unit co-ordinator of the unit has the sole discretion as to
how that laboratory period may be used. Their decision will be
made with the goal of using the laboratory in the most effective
manner for the teaching of their unit.
Each laboratory is expected to be used in one of three ways
during a prescribed laboratory period. Each laboratory's timetable
is pinned to its outer doors, and clearly indicates that each
prescribed laboratory period will be marked as either Registered,
Enrolled, or Other CSSE Students. An explanation
of each of these types of laboratory use follows:
- Registered: The laboratory may be reserved for the
exclusive use of students registered for that laboratory. All
students are expected to undertake laboratory work specifically
for that unit. Students not registered for that laboratory period
are required to leave at the commencement of the period (all
laboratories begin on the hour). Students may register for laboratory
periods using the School's csbookings
program.
- Enrolled: The laboratory may be reserved for the exclusive
use of students who are enrolled in the unit using the laboratory
during that period. During a laboratory marked as Enrolled,
students who are actually registered for that laboratory
period always have priority over other students. All students
are expected to undertake laboratory work specifically for that
unit, and to not undertake work for another unit.
- Other CSSE Students: The laboratory may be used by
any undergraduate students enrolled in units offered by Computer
Science & Software Engineering. During a laboratory marked
as Other CSSE Students, students who are actually registered
for that laboratory period always have priority, followed by
those students enrolled in the unit using the laboratory
during that period. All students are expected to undertake laboratory
work specifically for their Computer Science & Software Engineering
units.
- Outside of any prescribed laboratory periods, students may
use any computing equipment which they are authorized to access.
Students are expected to be self-policing and your assistance
in making the scheme work smoothly is appreciated. If necessary,
the unit's lecturer, unit co-ordinator, or laboratory supervisor
will ask any students who are not registered for the laboratory
to leave. The Policy will be subject to change if difficulties
arise.
